Juneteenth Google Doodle 2026
The Google Doodle I developed with the Doodle team last year honoring the day and it’s Texas roots is running again slightly revised. Check it out live if you get the chance.
June 19th 1865, 2+ years after the Emancipation Proclamation, is the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free. The juxtaposition of this experience, not knowing you’ve been free, but also, learning in this moment that you are. Since then we’ve been commemorating this day; getting together, spending time, before it officially became a federal holiday in 2021.
I wanted the doodle to exude that energy, the energy of liberation, freedom, joy, togetherness.

I’ve loved comics since I was a child, taking in the wit and satire of the Sunday strips with absolutely no idea what it all meant at the tender age of 6. As I got older and my ability to understand the writing grew so did my love for these strips. Satire informs a lot of my work today and in some respects my life haha.
I had the opportunity to put that lifelong love to work on a weekly collaboration with Damon Young, author of “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker: A Memoir in Essays”. The column explored anxieties and absurdities of American life – specifically culture, class, money, and race.
Pairing my illustrations with his writing was a treat.
